What is Welding?

Welding is a process or method of connecting two pieces of metals by application of heat (fusion) is called welding.

Advantages of Welding:-

1) In welding, there is no need of drilling holes ( as in the case of the rivet) due to which the strength of the member increases compared to that of riveted joint. It means there is no loss of cross-sectional area of structural members.

2) The efficiency of the joint is 100%, maybe more than 100% due to the higher quality of welding material which is not possible in riveted and bolted connection ( about 70 to 80 %).

3) Welding doesn't require extra connecting members like angle sections and Gausset plates.

4) It provides lightweight for the structural joint (Riveted joint is heavier and bulky).

5) It provides a pleasing appearance ( aesthetic).

6) It doesn't produce noise pollution. (compared to rivet)

7) It requires less space for work at the site.

8) It can be used in most complicated joint easily.

9) A structural member can be welded in any desired position.

10) It produces an economical joint.

11) It provides a fully rigid joint which is required for portal frames.

Disadvantages of Welded Connection:-

1) Due to uneven heating and cooling, it may cause twisting and warping of the joint.

2) It may produce internal stresses due to uneven heating and cooling.

3) It requires skilled labour.

4) It can show brittle failure.

5) It may show fatigue failure.

6) It requires skilled supervision and inspection because the internal holes are difficult to detect.
