Arch bridges are suitable for a medium-span range of 200 to 500m. This type of bridge is used with advantage for sites having deep gorges and steep rocky banks which serve as natural abutments for resisting the thrust of the bridge arch. The Arch is constructed in the form of a single solid slab of a series of independent ribs connected to each other suitably. The arch bridges are classified according to the arrangement adopted for supporting the deck. The various types of arch bridges can be broadly summarized as under.

In this type of construction, the arch is formed by a solid concrete slab. The deck of Carriageway is supported on earth filling placed on the slab. The earth in such a case is retained by constructing slide walls also termed as spandrel walls show the arch.
